State of the States - Featuring Arizona

How long have you been affiliated with the Arizona State Soccer Association?

I have been associated with Arizona State Soccer Association since 1990; the State Association has been in existence since 1966.

What is your name and title?

Dan Trainor, President

What do you enjoy most about volunteering, or what do you love most about US Adult Soccer?

Over the years I have held many soccer related volunteer positions from coaching, to State Association President, as well as USASA and US Soccer positions.  I enjoy volunteering for a number of reasons.  I have met a number of lifetime soccer friends all over the country and have become part of a network of like-minded soccer enthusiasts. Most important, is the satisfaction that I have grown soccer in Arizona and provided an opportunity for more players of all ages to enjoy this amazing game as an affiliate of USASA and US Soccer.

Please provide a recent success story from your state association that illustrates a positive impact in your community.

In the past year, we have introduced “Walking Soccer” with great interest across the State.  Although we had to delay a full rollout because of the pandemic, the silver lining is that with the recent COVID concerns and limited reopening of parks, the interest in walking soccer is peaking right now. Walking soccer allows for easier distance requirements as well as limited numbers of participants on the field.

What is unique about your state association?

Our state association is unique that in the most populated areas we have a “reversed season” from most other places, where we play through the winter.  We can play year-round in Arizona, depending on where in the state you play. In central and southern Arizona, we play in the winter. In northern Arizona due to snow, we play in the summer.
